How does counseling help?
When a counseling relationship is working well, clients experience new insights into their situations, clearer thinking, increased energy, better understanding of their feelings and needs, release of troubling emotions that have held them back or been confusing, and a greater sense of wholeness and peace within themselves. Therapy is a process, and a working partnership develops between client and therapist. Therapy is not always comfortable or straightforward as difficult emotions and ways of being often have to be sorted through in order for new energy and change to appear. Clients should feel comfortable with their therapist and be able to ask about whatever is on their mind regarding the process. In spite of the uncomfortable emotions experienced, clients I have worked with feel that the temporary pain of the working through process is well worth leaving behind the continual pain of living the way they had previously.
What Is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy, or personal counseling with a psychotherapist, is an intentional interpersonal relationship used by trained therapists to aid a client or patient in problems of living. Psychotherapy aims to increase the individual's sense of their own well-being. Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building: dialogue, communication and behavior change that are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient, or to improve group or family relationships.
What kinds of therapy are offered?
Individual therapy is available on a short-term basis. Decisions about the appropriate treatment are made on an individual basis. You can request a male or female therapist.
Couples counseling is available for same sex and opposite sex couples
Group therapy includes 5 to 8 people and meet once a week. Group therapy may include:

How often do I come?
That depends on your issue. Most individuals feel that they accomplish more by coming weekly; some come bi-weekly. We have found that as your progress continues and you begin to reach your goals it is most advantageous to come less and less. This allows you to continue to individually work toward your goals
Can I Avoid a Therapy Session and Just You Ask a Few Questions by Email?
Absolutely not! One of the major problems facing each therapist is patients seeking quick answers to complicated issues. I would be doing you a disservice by doing this. You should be concerned about any individual therapist who claims professionalism and indulges in this kind of conduct
How do I go about scheduling an appointment?
For those families and individuals living in the Southeastern region of Virginia, or areas nearby, In-Person sessions are available Monday through Saturdays. Your first visit is approximately an hour and a half. All other sessions are approximately one hour.
What insurances do you accept?
We accept almost all insurance including Employee Assistance Programs for various companies, Military One Source if you are active duty military or a dependent and do not want to use your Tricare, and a host of others. Call the office for more information.
